While Honduras suffers from many problems, Osman Hope centers on the plight of the children in Honduras. There are approximately 10,000 street children, only half of whom have shelter on any given day. This number is compounded by the number of latch key children who are left alone at home to fend for themselves while the parent works. Over 70% of the population is under nourished. 40% of the children under age 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition and four percent of this age group die each year because of inadequate health care. Upon entering our shelters, a typical child will increase their body weight by 15-20%. Our children receive ongoing health care and are given ant-parasitic medicine semi-annually. Through our child sponsorship program, $52 a month or $624 a year will provide a safe and healthy environment where the child will get two meals and two snacks daily. In Honduras, only 43% of the children finish the sixth grade. Of those, only 30% will finish secondary school. Stated another way, out of 100 children entering school, only 13 will graduate from secondary school. Osman Hope realized that we needed to more for the children than just providing care in the shelters. After the sixth grade, the Hondurans are required to pay for their education. For many families this is not financially possible. For $500 a year, you can insure that a child graduating from our shelters can go on to finish their education and become viable members of the work force.
